Gustave Cariot

Biography of Gustave Cariot ( 1872-1950 )

The painter Gustave Cariot was born in 1872 in Paris in the Marais district. His father was a luggage maker. Very young, Cariot drew sketches of Paris and the surrounding countryside. 

The artist was strongly influenced by the work of Claude Monet, his series of 1890-1891 and his views of the Cathedral of Rouen, as well as by the technique of pointillist and divisionist painters. 

His subjects were mainly rural, with views of gardens, fields with millstones in the Rhine Valley, hills in the Rance Valley and rivers near Périgny sur Yerres. He painted many views of Paris, the roofs, bridges and the banks of the Seine in different seasons. 

Cariot developed a very bright palette of colors, whose tones of orange, purple and green were sometimes saturated.  

The artist joinde the Society of Independent Artists and exhibited in major exhibitions in Paris. He also participated in the Salon d'Automne and the Salon d'Hiver.
