Jules Goupil was a French painter, specialised in genre portraits and scenes of French Revolution. He first studied with his father, Frédéric Auguste Antoine Goupil, who was a porcelain painter.
Then the young Goupil joined Ary Scheffer’s class at the Beaux Arts, where he enhanced his technique. He first exhibited some noteworthy portraits at the Salon at the age of eighteen. From 1864, he mainly exhibited scenes of genre before dedicating himself to History painting.
He gained a lot of rewards at the Salon, especially in 1875 where he gained a first class medal for his painting named « In 1795 ». He exhibited regularly in Brussels and Munich too, where his paintings are very well-liked.
He was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and Officer of Leopold Order.
