Little is known about the life and training of this painter, who specialized in portraits and landscapes. He seems to have been in touch with the main artistic currents of his time, and with many artists of the Berlin School. His landscapes are similar in style to those of post-Impressionist artists, while his portraits are often more academic in technique.
