With Post-Impressionism & Modern Art, Galerie Ary Jan presents a journey through the artistic sensibilities that shaped French art from the late nineteenth century to the decades of the twentieth.
While Impressionism profoundly transformed the way artists perceived landscape, light, and modern life, the generations that followed pursued these explorations in a variety of directions. Some emphasized the structure of space and the strength of composition, while others investigated the expressive possibilities of color, the intimacy of everyday scenes, or the decorative synthesis of form.
The exhibition brings together works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Albert Marquet, Gustave Loiseau, Henry Moret, Achille Laugé, Norbert Goeneutte, Paul-César Helleu, Louise Abbéma, and François-Xavier Lalanne. Though their approaches differ, all shared a desire to expand upon the Impressionist legacy and to develop new ways of representing the world around them.
From the light-filled landscapes of Loiseau, Moret, and Laugé to the elegant figures of Helleu and Abbéma, from Marquet’s modern cityscapes to the distinctive menagerie of François-Xavier Lalanne, this selection highlights the diversity and vitality of French artistic creation over the course of nearly a century. It also reveals the connections that unite these artists across generations: a sustained attention to light, materiality, and the freedom of artistic vision.
More than a historical overview, Post-Impressionism & Modern Art invites visitors to discover how the artistic modernity of the twentieth century gradually emerged from the achievements of Impressionism.
