Description of the artwork

Among Fernand Toussaint's most representative works, this elegant composition was chosen to illustrate the cover of the definitive monograph devoted to the artist, underscoring its emblematic place within his oeuvre. It brings together the subjects for which he is best known: the female figure, flowers and refined interiors, all treated with remarkable sensitivity.

Absorbed in the contemplation of a bouquet of freshly cut roses, the sitter is captured in a moment of quiet intimacy and grace. Nothing is theatrical; instead, Toussaint favours a natural pose and a suspended gesture that lend the scene a quiet poetry. Faithful to the aesthetic of the Belgian society portrait at the beginning of the twentieth century, he avoids overt psychological expression, allowing elegance and restraint to define the work's enduring charm.

A colourist of exceptional refinement, Toussaint employs a delicate palette dominated by powdery pinks, deep greens and subtle touches of blue in the sitter's hat, which gently enliven the composition. Light impasto gives substance to the soft folds of the dress, while a richer application of paint captures the velvety texture of the rose petals and the freshness of the blooms. This painterly virtuosity, never ostentatious, reveals his remarkable command of light, colour and texture.

Through this intimate scene, Fernand Toussaint celebrates a serene vision of beauty in which feminine grace is naturally echoed by the blossoming roses. Far more than a display of technical skill, the painting embodies the very essence of his art: an art of elegance, light and delicacy that remains one of the finest expressions of the Belgian Belle Époque.
