In 1986, Jacques Boutersky acquired his first work by Toshio Bando at Drouot. The discovery of this little-known Japanese artist prompted him to seek out his widow. This first meeting was followed by many others, which became regular until the death in Paris in 1994 of this charming old lady, a former pianist and privileged witness to her husband's rich and intense life for forty years.
Since 1989, Jacques Boutersky has worked to defend and gain recognition for the singularity and importance of Toshio Bando's work. He has worked in tandem with Sylvie Buisson, who also promotes the work of Toshio Bando, the only artist to have had the privilege of sharing Tsuguharu Foujita's studio in Montparnasse between 1922 and 1924.
His extensive collection of 121 works was auctioned off in April 2025, creating keen interest among collectors and museums, including the Musée Cernuschi, which pre-sold several of the master's paintings.
