Description of the artwork

From 1855 onwards, Gérôme made regular visits to the eastern Mediterranean coast. In 1855-1856, he traveled to Egypt with Emile Augier and Auguste Bartholdi. It was following this trip that the great variety of subjects treated by the artist appeared at the 1857 Salon.
This drawing was produced during the first of Gérôme's six trips to Egypt during his lifetime, in 1856. It is signed by Aimé Morot, the painter's son-in-law.

Part of the same group of drawings, one is now in the Metropolitan Museum, “Portrait d'Assan”, with the same format and technique.
