Galerie Ary Jan is delighted to lend six works to the Musée des Avelines for their exhibition ‘Henri Regnault, the sword and the brush’.

An exceptional painter and heroic figure, Henri Regnault left an indelible mark thanks to his striking works and his courage on the battlefield, particularly at the battle of Montretout-Buzenval in January 1871, where he was killed. His life and his creations reflect an unceasing quest for beauty and truth, from his first successes in the prestigious Prix de Rome to the dazzling works he produced during his travels in Spain and Morocco.

During his lifetime, Regnault expressed the dream "of a house that would be wide open to all his friends, to his comrades in arms or on his travels, to artists, poets and scholars, where they could all share their memories, their sensations and their thoughts".

The exhibition thus opens up to the artistic creations of the painter's entourage, in particular the faithful Alexandre Bida, Carolus-Duran, Georges Clairin, Benjamin-Constant and Marcello, revealing the soul of a creator who combined the art of painting and that of fighting with an unrivalled passion.
