Organized by the future Lusail Museum in collaboration with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Seeing Is Believing: The Art and Influence of Gérôme features almost 400 works. It includes major loans from Qatar's general museum collections and prestigious institutions around the world, such as New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Malaysia's Museum of Islamic Art.

Gérôme, one of the most famous and successful European artists of the 19th century, was hailed in his day as a history painter and visual storyteller, bringing to life the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome. But it was as a chronicler of the modern cultures and peoples of North Africa and the Middle East that he made his greatest impact. Traveling repeatedly to Egypt and Turkey, and making numerous other stops in the region between 1855 and 1880, Gérôme created some of the most enduring images and themes of Orientalism. His representations, at once whimsical and faithfully naturalistic, played a major role in defining the Middle Eastern world for Europe, America and Britain.
