In an 1893 letter from Antoine de La Rochefoucauld to Paul Signac, we discover that he practiced his hand to perfect his pointillist technique as follows: “Every day for half an hour, I make scales on a board, regularly applying very clean strokes that are neither too large nor too small (...) just to practice my hand”.
In another letter dated 1894, he wrote: "Can I make any plans, dear friend? May I even consider a trip to Saint-Tropez in early autumn? Such a trip was envisaged if the condition of “l'ange” (as he called his wife, whom Paul SIGNAC didn't much like) improved... "Our painting was probably done during this period.
Our painting was probably done during this period, around 1894 or much later, back in his home in the Eure, where he could patiently resume his pointillist work on a large format.
The painting has been authenticated by the Signac archives
