Description of the artwork

Looking at the travel accounts of writers and painters who took part in campaigns in the Orient during the 19th century, it's surprising to read that champagne accompanied these expeditions. An emblem of French culture, champagne was described by Honoré de Balzac as a symbol of friendship, while Talleyrand did not hesitate to describe it as “the wine of civilization”. It was not only served during major discoveries in Egypt, but also given as gifts and shared with local authorities.
In his illustrated travel accounts, the painter-writer describes in great detail his impressions and the local life he shares with his hosts. Out of respect for his beloved culture, the artist takes care in this painting not to offend local customs. He therefore chooses to portray himself as the man about to uncork the bottle of champagne. The subject is treated with panache and humor, as the protagonists seem torn between pride, fear, curiosity and distrust.
